Master Classes in Systemic Designing now available

Master Classes in Systemic Designing https://www.haroldgnelson.com/masterclasses   It’s Time for a pivot in how we approach securing improvements in the human condition     These Systemic Design Master Classes offer a general overview of one thread of inquiry that is used in the development of a supportive foundation for stances and approaches to systemic designing.    Familiarity with this thread is intended to be the inception point for future shared exchanges with others who are learning and applying systemic design approaches.     These inquiries are meant to further develop fundamental skills and perspectives acquired — not through argumentation and debate — but rather through conversations and dialogues.    These Inquires are guided in part by the values and beliefs made visible in the prospectus for a proposed Systemic-Design ‘Flight’ School :   https://www.academia.edu/110744521/PROSPECTUS_Systemic_Design_Flight_Schoo...

The Humanities crisis isn't academic

This is an excellent article concerning the crisis with The Humanities that is so prevalent in public discourse nowadays. The author makes the assertion that the crisis is not academic ie with universities. Hopefully this article will begin a longer conversation on the relationships among The Arts and Humanities, Science and Technology and  serious Design—a Systemic conversation. https://open.substack.com/pub/tedgioia/p/the-real-crisis-in-humanities-isnt?r=asq7d&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

Don Norman on Design

In Don Norman's video , he explains why traditional design needs to be nudged towards 'design thinking'. He makes some excellent points and makes a strong case for 'design' as more than mere appearance.  https://lnkd.in/gDpmkvkX However, 'systemic design', is even more essential for improving the human condition than 'design thinking'. 'Systemic design' is not 'design thinking (problem-solving) but they share many of the same aspirations. Don's video is a good start in gaining some understanding in this. Thanks Don. Check my website ( www.haroldgnelson.com ) for additional resources on making design and systems (systemic design) better understood than is the norm.

Planning vs Strategy by Roger Martin

Roger Martin on planning and strategy   This presentation is an excellent example of disclosing and making transparent terms, concepts and ideas used causally or recklessly in common exchange. Roger Martin (leader in organizational management and education) discusses what ‘planning’ and ‘strategy’ is in contrast and in particular. This is exemplary in how to approach thinking about seminal concepts carefully in social science and social media.    Although his examples are drawn from large scale business organizations the generalizable insights are applicable to a number of domains including professions, governmental agencies, academia and military organizations. Additionally, as a bonus in this presentation, ‘design’ is introduced towards the end at an equally disclosive and transparent level of discourse.      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID5gEmrg_F8&t=167s

design conversations

Definitions and design   Definitions cut off conversations. Viable conversations about what design can be and what we desire it to be ought to be nurtured and sustained. This particular article draws from narrowed assumptions of a particular tradition of design and is not inclusive of the broad diversity of approaches to understanding and practicing design spread across communities of interest — which would inform a richer exchange of ideas about design and designing.    https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/02/22/1068297/design-definition-needs-change/   Design is a mystery — an indeterminate mystery. The questions to be posed are what does anyone mean when they use the term 'design' and why? What do they desire this term to mean? That will allow generable dialogues to develop thus advancing our shared understanding and appreciation for design and design practices.

The Many, Many Faces of Design

Narratives are finally emerging that make the case for discernment (see below) rather than negation by assumption or assertion which is too often the case. This is a healthy trend. For example see Donald Norman's focus on the term 'product design': Forwarded Message ----- From:  Don Norman < dnorman@ucsd.edu > To:  " phd-design@jiscmail.ac.uk " < phd-design@jiscmail.ac.uk > Sent:  Sunday, December 15, 2019, 01:31:56 PM MST Subject:  Product Design means too many different things to be a useful description There is product design, and then there is product design. The request for lists o product design courses is understandable, but not only not useful, but it is not nearly specific enough. A financial product is very different from a medical one, which is different than a bridge, or building, or automobile. These are different than kitchen appliances. Engineering design courses tend to focus on, guess what, engineering aspects....

The Promise of Systemic Designing

Chapter just published:  The Promise of Systemic Designing: Giving Form to Water  Learning, Design, and Technology pp 1-50 |  Cite as Harold G. Nelson (1) Email author ( nelson.group43@gmail.com )  1. Computer Science, University of Montana, , Missoula, USA  Abstract The world is understood to be more complex and dynamic than previously thought. Design is understood to be a deeper mystery than previously assumed. Design creates reality. Humans have engaged in design activities – designing – from the beginning of history, but little is known of its true nature or full potential. Familiar approaches to design and design education no longer match the real-world necessities and expectations of modern societies. Everything is connected, and it is difficult, or it seems often impossible, to determine what course of action is prudent when designing within such complexity. Systemic design is an emergent means for creating desired change that takes a broader ...

Commanders Design Team 19

Just finished a practicum with the Commander’s Design Team for the US STRATCOM (Strategic Command) where another new design team is forming. It is great to work with the leadership of this group because they understand that design and systemics are more than that offered by fads and decoys carrying a label ‘design’. The context is challenging because a traditional military structure is not very amenable to new ways of working—such as designing or systemic designing—which are essential for success in a rapidly changing, complex world. The design projects are also challenging because of the scale and consequences of the STRATCOM mission. Great design challenge!

outwitting America by design

Outwitting (thinking) America  by design. These success stories are not the consequence of applying 'design thinking' or other fads to challenges of consequence. Some things to think about from this article include challenges on how to begin to think and act more effectively— including our educational designs and professional practices—at the highest levels. Or we can continue to practice being resilient and agile in the face of massive disruptions. The choice is ours:

Books That Ought to Live

I am asked often for suggestions on readings for systemic design related topics. I also notice the lack of references in contemporary writing to watershed ideas and thinkers from just a few decades ago. As new generations of professionals and scholars begin exploring new or newish domains of interest such as design, design thinking, systems, systems approach, systems thinking et. al. it would be good to explore books and authors who have been left out of the canon of accepted texts for normative disciplines and professional fields. This article is a good reminder that there are books that need to be rediscovered even though they have been shunned by their own: Books that wouldn’t die https://lnkd.in/gtmGXuC
